In 2002, he was invited by the curators Emanuela De Cecco and Vicente Todolì to participate with an installation in the courtyard of the former San Domenico prison in San Gimignano for the edition of Art to Art VII.

Mirosław Bałkais a Polish artist born on December 16, 1958, in Warsaw. He currently lives and works between Otwock, Poland, and Oliva, Spain. In 1985, Bałka graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, where he has headed the Studio of Spatial Activities at the Faculty of Media Art since 2011. In 2012, he was appointed professor by the President of Poland. Between 1986 and 1989, together with Mirosław Filonik and Marek Kijewski, he founded the art group “Consciousness Neue Bieremiennost.” He is a member of the Akademie der Künste in Berlin. Through the use of everyday elements and materials—such as iron, wood, salt, and soap—which strongly evoke rituals and personal memories, Bałka creates works that prompt reflection on history, religion, and mythology. At the center of his artistic practice is the human figure, and regardless of the expressive forms and artistic languages he adopts, the human body is always present—either directly or indirectly—in his work. Bałka has exhibited his works at numerous international institutions, including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York.
