Anish Kapoor (Bombay, 1954) is one of the most important contemporary artists, known for his monumental sculptures that play with space, perception, and colour. His works, characterised by a deep exploration of material and its symbolic potential, challenge artistic conventions and create immersive experiences that directly involve the viewer.
In 1997, he/she/it participated in the 2nd edition of Art to Art with a large marble sculpture located in front of the Church of San Giusto and with a series of Alabaster sculptures displayed at the Pinacoteca di Volterra. In 2005, he returned to participate in the X edition of the project with the work Underground, made in San Gimignano.
In 2009, he took part in the project Arte Pollino with the work Earth Cinema, located in Latronico in the Pollino National Park, while in 2011 it realised Ascension at St. George's Basilica on the occasion of Venice Biennale, an artwork that fit perfectly into the historical and architectural context of the place.
Kapoor continues to be a central figure in the contemporary art scene, with works that stimulate dialogue between art, nature, and public space.
Anish Kapoor Born in Bombay in 1954. In the 1970s, he moved to London, where he still lives and works today. In the last thirty years, his work has been exhibited in the most important museums and institutions worldwide. He has had solo exhibitions at the Kunsthalle in Basel, the Tate Gallery and Hayward Gallery in London, the Reina Sofia in Madrid, the CAPC in Bordeaux, the CCBB Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil in Brasilia, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, and more recently, at the Haus der Kunst in Munich and the Royal Academy in London.
In 2010, he first exhibited in India at the National Gallery of Modern Art in New Delhi and at Mehboob Studios in Mumbai. The artist has also participated in numerous group exhibitions in venues such as the Serpentine Gallery in London, documenta IX in Kassel, Moderna Museet in Stockholm, Centre Georges Pompidou, the Louvre and Grand Palais in Paris, Guggenheim in Berlin, New York and Bilbao. Many public and private collections house the artist's works, including MoMA in New York and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. Anish Kapoor received the ‘Premio Duemila’ at the 1990 Venice Biennale, the Turner Prize in 1991, and was awarded the
Honorary Fellowship at the London Institute in 1997 and in 2003 he received the CBE. Since 2001, he has been an honorary member of the Royal Institute of British Architects.
