Jennifer Wen Ma è un’artista multidisciplinare nata a Pechino e residente a New York. Il suo lavoro si muove tra installazione, scultura, disegno, video e performance, esplorando temi come l’identità, la natura, la collettività e la spiritualità attraverso un linguaggio visivo poetico e innovativo.

In 2005, Jennifer Wen Ma collaborated with Cai Guo-Qiang on the occasion of Art to Art X, showcasing the Aeolian Garden at the museum UMoCA from Colle di Val d’Elsa. This project, overseen by the Arte Continua Association, featured the participation of internationally renowned artists, celebrating the dialogue between contemporary art and the local context.

Jennifer Wen Ma has exhibited her work in numerous international contexts, including the Venice Biennale, and continues to distinguish herself through her ability to merge tradition and modernity in pieces that engage and move audiences.

Jennifer Wen Ma (1973, Pechino, Cina) è un’artista visiva che si è trasferita negli Stati Uniti nel 1986, conseguendo il Master in Belle Arti nel 1999 presso il Pratt Institute di New York. Vive e lavora tra New York e Pechino. La pratica interdisciplinare di Ma combina diversi media, tra cui installazioni, disegno, video, arte pubblica, design, performance e teatro. Le sue opere uniscono elementi inaspettati in composizioni poetiche e toccanti.

I suoi progetti includono collaborazioni con istituzioni di rilievo come il New Britain Museum of American Art (2021), il Musée de l’Hospice Comtesse a Lille (2021), il Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum di New York (2017), la Cass Sculpture Foundation (2016) e il Qatar Museums (2016). Ha inoltre presentato l’opera-installazione Paradise Interrupted prestigious festivals such as the Spoleto USA Festival, Lincoln Center Festival, and Singapore International Festival of the Arts, with a preview at the Temple of Dendur at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

In 2005, on the occasion of Art to Art X, Jennifer Wen Ma created the public installation Aeolian Garden in the town of Colle di Val d’Elsa, Italy, an innovative project that brought its poetic language into dialogue with the local context.

Tra i riconoscimenti ricevuti, nel 2019 è stata premiata con l’Anonymous Was a Woman Award e una sovvenzione del National Endowment for the Arts per la mostra Cry Joy Park–––Gardens of Dark and Light. He also won an Emmy in 2008 for his work as part of the creative team and lead visual effects designer for the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics.

She teaches on the Master of Fine Arts program at the School of Visual Arts in New York, and has lectured at prestigious institutions including Rhode Island School of Design, Cornell University, Yale University, Columbia University, and The Courtauld Institute of Art.
