Giovanni Anselmo

Giovanni Anselmo was an Italian artist of international significance, known for his contribution to the Arte Povera movement. His work consists mainly of installations related to the concept of energy, which is played out on balancing relationships between opposing drives.

For the edition of Art to Art Icurated by Laura Cherubinipresented a site-specific installation for the balcony of the City Hall in San Gimignano.

Giovanni Anselmo (Borgofranco d'Ivrea, 5 August 1934) after completing classical studies, he trained as a self-taught painter. He made his debut in 1967 in a group exhibition at Galleria Sperone in Turin with two untitled polymateric works. In 1967 he took part in the exhibition 'ConTempL'azione' in Turin, an event that marked the beginning of the Arte Povera movement, and from the following year he took part in the group's exhibitions, led by the critic Germano Celant, together with Michelangelo Pistoletto, Piero Gilardi and Gilberto Zorio. In 1968 he held his first solo exhibition at the Galleria Sperone and at the same time began to present some of his works at international events, such as the exhibition in Berne When Attitudes Become Form of 1969. Anselmo took part in the Venice Biennale in 1978, 1980 and 1990 when he won the Golden Lion for Painting. Anselmo passed away on 18 December 2023 at the age of 89.
